Radical UK Islamist group holds London conference. 'Why is Palestine still occupied?' asks speaker

Yaakov Lappin

The British branch of a world-wide radical Islamist group, Hizb ut-Tahrir, held a conference in London on Saturday, in which speakers called for the overthrow of Muslim governments and their replacement with a single Islamic state, known as the caliphate. According to Hizb ut-Tahrir's website, "thousands" of people attended the conference.

Hizb ut-Tahrir - the Liberation Party in English - is active in dozens of countries, but has been banned in several Arab states, as well as European countries such as Germany and Russia. It is also illegal in China. In Britain, the organization is still legal, despite instances of the group's members and websites being found to promote anti-Semitic incitement to violence and calls for suicide bombings. In Australia, the organization is facing the prospect of a ban.

HEBRON, West Bank: Using sledge hammers, chain saws and power cutters, Israeli police stormed a building in the West Bank town of Hebron early Tuesday and dragged out hundreds of settlers who had been living there "illegally", hoping to expand the Jewish presence in the volatile biblical city.

The Mideast needs more guns? Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

THE LAST THING the Middle East needs is a new round of arms sales, but that is what the Bush administration wants Congress to approve, the better to contain Iran's bid for dominance in the region. Under its current leadership, Tehran is a threat to regional stability. But that threat is best contained through diplomacy and a clear statement that, whatever happens in Iraq, US forces will not leave the region altogether.

The administration proposes to sell more than $20 billion of weaponry to Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states. Iran is a textbook case of how badly awry such arms deals can go in a volatile region like the Mideast. During the reign of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Tehran bought large stocks of US weapons, only to have them fall into the hands of the ayatollahs after the 1979 revolution that overthrew the shah.

30 percent of arms are unaccounted for, GAO estimates

Glenn Kessler

The Pentagon has lost track of about 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols given to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005, according to a new government report, raising fears that some of those weapons have fallen into the hands of insurgents fighting U.S. forces in Iraq.

The report from the Government Accountability Office indicates that U.S. military officials do not know what happened to 30 percent of the weapons the United States distributed to Iraqi forces from 2004 through early this year as part of an effort to train and equip the troops. The highest previous estimate of unaccounted-for weapons was 14,000, in a report issued last year by the inspector general for Iraq reconstruction.

Greek Text A

From "The Apocryphal New Testament"

M.R. James-Translation and Notes

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1924

Introduction

The older testimonies about this book have been given already. I now present the three principal forms of it, as given by Tischendorf: two Greek texts, A and B, and one Latin.

The few Greek manuscripts are all late. The earliest authorities are a much abbreviated Syriac version of which the manuscript is of the sixth century, and a Latin palimpsest at Vienna of the fifth or sixth century, which has never been deciphered in full.

The Latin version translated here is found in more manuscripts than the Greek; none of them, I think, is earlier than the thirteenth century.

The stories of Thomas the Israelite, the Philosopher, concerning the works of the Childhood of the Lord.

How the CIA created Osama bin Laden Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

NORM DIXON

This article first appeared in Green Left Weekly, Australia's leading leftwing newspaper. Posted with permission of the author.

“Throughout the world ... its agents, client states and satellites are on the defensive — on the moral defensive, the intellectual defensive, and the political and economic defensive. Freedom movements arise and assert themselves. They're doing so on almost every continent populated by man — in the hills of Afghanistan, in Angola, in Kampuchea, in Central America ... [They are] freedom fighters.”

Is this a call to jihad (holy war) taken from one of Islamic fundamentalist Osama bin Laden's notorious fatwas? Or perhaps a communique issued by the repressive Taliban regime in Kabul?

In fact, this glowing praise of the murderous exploits of today's supporters of arch-terrorist bin Laden and his Taliban collaborators, and their holy war against the “evil empire”, was issued by US President Ronald Reagan on March 8, 1985. The “evil empire” was the Soviet U n i o n, as well as Third World movements fighting US-backed colonialism, apartheid and dictatorship.
