Jewish Mom in Custody Battle With Saudi Prince Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Hebrews

Renee Ghert-Zand

A Saudi prince is facing an international arrest warrant for not handing over custody of his 10-year-old daughter to her French-Jewish mother.

The Paris criminal court ordered Prince Sattam al-Saud, of the royal Saudi family, to give the little girl, Aya, to her mother, Candice Cohen-Ahnine. The prince, however, says he is not planning to do so. “France hasn’t got the right to take her back. She is a Saudi citizen and a princess. They cannot oblige a princess to leave this country,” he reportedly said.

In a he-said/she-said battle resulting from an interfaith romance gone sour, al-Saud refutes Cohen-Ahnine’s charges that he kidnapped both mother and daughter. The prince reportedly gave Cohen-Ahnine the option of becoming his second wife and living with him in his Riyadh palace when he became obligated to marry a cousin in 2006 (he and Cohen-Ahnine had met at a London nightclub in 1998 and their daughter was born in 2001), but she refused and they separated.

Cohen-Ahnine claims that the prince detained her and the little girl against their will while they were on a visit to Saudi Arabia in 2008. The mother managed to escape the palace and seek refuge in the French embassy, but the daughter remained behind. According to the Telegraph, Cohen-Ahnine had to be secretly taken out of the country because al-Saud had produced a document purporting that she had converted from Islam to Judaism, which is a crime punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

It looks as though neither efforts by the Sarkozy government on behalf of Cohen-Ahnine, nor the French court’s custody and $13,000 per month child support order are going to help all that much. “What do I care of Sarkozy?” al-Saud told Nouvel Observateur magazine. “If need be, I’ll go like [Osama] bin Laden and hide in the mountains with Aya.”

What happened 90 Years Ago in San Remo Italy? Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Hebrews

Although quite unknown to most, San Remo, Italy was the place where, in “modern times”, it was decided that Israel would be the official internationally recognized homeland of the Jewish people.

It was about 90 years ago when the original dividing of the Middle Eastern lands took place in this quaint Italian town called San Remo, and still today many are unfamiliar with its history. Watch this fascinating video to become educated about the internationally recognized rights of the Jewish People to the Land of Israel.

You are guaranteed to learn something you didn’t know. Most importantly, we ask you to SHARE this very important video with everyone you know!

Déjà Jew Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

Is European anti-Semitism different today or is there a feeling that we've been here before?

The term déjà vu brings to mind the English expression, been there, done that. The odd sensation of reliving something for the second time unnerves us precisely because it’s so convincingly familiar.

Over the course of 2 months, I visited Jewish communities in the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Belgium and the UK and interviewed dozens of Jewish leaders as well as “laymen” – both Jews and non-Jews. While attempting to determine the seriousness of contemporary European Anti-Semitism, I experienced what I would term “déjà Jew” - the peculiar sense that we, the members of Jewish people, are reliving an experience from the past; that we have somehow time-traveled and are now re-experiencing  occurrences that are all too familiar.

From the mid-1930s to early 1940s, Jews who recognized that they were no longer safe in Europe anxiously sought refuge abroad. Sylvain Zenouda, the co-founder and current vice president of the Bureau National de Vigilance Contre l"Antisèmitism—an organization which monitors and documents anti-Semitism in France—told me that educated young Jews in France with the financial means to do so have either fled the country or are making plans to flee. Again?

80 years ago, our people were being verbally abused and brutally assaulted in public places. And now it seems to be happening all over again. Viviane Teitelbaum, a minister in the Brussels Regional Parliament, related an incident that occurred this past November involving a 13-year old Jewish girl in Brussels. The girl was brutally assaulted at her school, resulting in her hospitalization for multiple injuries including a concussion. The attackers were not members of the Third Reich’s SS, but a group of female Muslim students at the same school. The ringleader pronounced her to be a “filthy Jew!” Apparently, in the weeks prior to the attack, the girl’s father had approached the authorities and the school with complaints that there had been threats made by fellow classmates against his daughter.  Upon hearing that his concerns were simply brushed aside, I immediately thought of Yogi Berra’s famous gaff: “This is like déjà vu all over again!”

2 generations ago, some Jews sought to protect themselves by masquerading as Aryans. In an interview conducted in November, a Parisian mother related how the fear of being physically attacked by Muslim extremist thugs means that it is “not rare at all today” for French Jewish students to attempt to pass themselves off as Muslim - with some even going as far as to fast on Ramadan. One case in point was a Jewish girl of North African descent who for years was successful in this deception, until finally she was “exposed” when Muslim girls caught her eating matzah in the bathroom during Pesah. After her classmates beat her viciously, they invited their male Muslim friends to their school to participate in a gang rape.

Wait…didn’t this happen to us already?

Benjamin Netanyahu

Zev Jabotinsky

Born in Russia in 1880, Jabotinsky learned law and later became one of the most prominent writers in the Russian language. The ensuing pogroms of 1903 motivated his Zionism, and he organized self-defense units and fought for the rights of the Russian Jewish minority.

After serving as a delegate to the 6th Zionist Congress, Jabotinsky, alongside Joseph Trumpeldor organized the first Jewish Legion during World War I.

Under the British mandate, Jabotinsky stood at the head of Jerusalem's Haganah (defense) against the Arab riots of 1920, for which he was incarcerated. After his release in 1925 he established the Revisionist Zionist alliance (Hatzohar), which called for the immediate establishment of a Jewish state in the Land of Israel.

In 1937 the national military organization in Israel became the military arm of Jabotinsky's movement and he became its commander. He also stood at the head of the New Zionist Union, The Beitar Youth Movement; these three bodies were three extensions of the same movement.

During WWII Jabotinsky was active in Britain and the United States in the hope of establishing a Jewish army to fight side by side with the Allies against Nazi Germany.

He died in 1940, with his will commanding that his remains be interred only in Eretz Israel by the future Hebrew Government, which was fulfilled later in 1964 when his and his wife's remains were reinterred on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.

Menahem Begin

Menachem Begin was born in BrestLitovsk in 1913, and was forced to flee with his family to escape the violence of WWI. He joined Jabotinsky's Betar youth movement in his teens, rising quickly to important administrative and leadership positions. He led Betar Czechoslovakia and Betar Poland by 1939, which engaged in weapons training to defend Polish Jewry, preparation and transport of "illegal" immigrants to Israel, agricultural training, and communications.

Contacting the dormant Jewish underground, Irgun Tzavi Leumi, Begin set about planning a Jewish uprising against the British authorities, which intensified immediately after World War II and continued until late 1947. Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Begin disbanded the Irgun (organization).

From 1948 to 1977, Menachem Begin was the leader of Israel's opposition. In the 1950's, he led the movement against accepting German reparations for the Nazi Holocaust. In 1965, Begin merged his Herut Party with the Liberals to form Gahal, which later served as the foundation of the Likud Party. This merge saw the establishment of a National Unity Government, which finally brought Begin and other Gahal leaders to the Cabinet table. The National Unity Government continued until 1970, when Begin insisted that Israel condition Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's extension of the cease-fire across the Suez Canal on the signing of a peace treaty recognizing Israel.

In 1977, Begin was elected Prime Minister. As such, he helped initiate the peace process with Egypt, which resulted in the Camp David Accords and the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty.

In 1981, Begin ordered the Israeli Air Force to bomb the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq, where the Iraqi regime was developing nuclear weapons. Despite international backlash at the time, it became apparent during the 1991 Gulf Warthat Israel's action had succeeded in hampering Baghdad's drive to acquire nuclear weapons.

In 1982, after repeated acts of PLO terror, Israel launched Operation Peace for Galilee to remove the terrorist threat from Israel's northern border.

Begin's decision to encourage Ethiopian Jews to immigrate to Israel later culminated in Operation Moses, which brought thousands en masse to Israel in the early 1980's.

He died March 9, 1992, and was buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Jewish American titan from the ghetto Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

The JC essay

Christopher Hitchens

Look first upon this picture, and on this… the two photographs of Saul Bellow that adorn the initial covers of the Library of America edition of his collected works.

In the first, we see a somewhat rakish fellow, sharply dressed and evidently fizzing with moxie, who meets the world with a cool and level gaze that belies the slight impression of a pool shark or racetrack con artist.

In the second, and in profile, we get a survey of a sage in a more reflective pose; but this is a sage who still might utter a well-chosen wisecrack out of the side of his mouth.

The antique history of the shtetl and the ghetto is inscribed in both studies of the man, but some considerable physical and mental distance has evidently been travelled in each case.

What use was war without also love? Yiddishism or no Yiddishism, this must count as one of the most affirmative and masculine sentences ever set down

At Bellow's memorial meeting, held in the Young Men's Hebrew Association at Lexington Avenue and 92nd Street in 2005, the main speakers were Ian Mc
Ewan, Jeffrey Eugenides, Martin Amis, William Kennedy and James Wood.

Had it not been for an especially vapid speech by some forgettable rabbi, the platform would have been exclusively composed of non-Jews, many of them non-American.

How had Bellow managed to exert such an effect on writers almost half his age, from another tradition and another continent? Putting this question to the speakers later on, I received two particularly memorable responses. Ian McEwan related his impression that Bellow, alone among American writers of his generation, had seemed to assimilate the whole European classical inheritance. And Martin Amis vividly remembered something Bellow had once said to him, which is that, if you are born in the ghetto, the very conditions compel you to look skywards, and thus to hunger for the universal.
