Encrypting Against Department of Homeland Security's New Laptop Search Policy Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

Computer security has never been more necessary. In the past, the threat of a security breach has come in the form of thieves: stolen laptops and PDAs, identity theft, and the like. These days the threat comes from a new ruling by a U.S. court. The Department of Homeland Security will now be allowed to confiscate laptops coming into the U.S. for an indefinite amount of time. Customs and Border Patrol will be able to search laptops or any other electronic device, download entire contents and keep the device for several days.

"This policy can create headaches -- or worse -- for unsuspecting travelers who don't plan ahead," says Jamie Brenzel, CEO of online data storage and backup service Data Deposit Box ( ).

Imagine your vital business accounting data being out of reach for days. Worse yet, what if your private financial information was exposed to the wrong people? What if a potential business partnership was leaked before the deal was made? Any of these scenarios is cause for concern. So what can be done?

AnalogX PCalc Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF

If you're a programmer, you've probably downloaded a so-called 'programmers calculator' at least once in your life, only to be sorely disappointed; I'm sorry, but displaying the results in hex and/or binary doesn't make a calculator a 'programmers calculator', nor does making 42 a constant in it either! Someone should do something about this, and someone has...

Programmers around the world, your prayers have been answered - Behold AnalogX PCalc, the ULTIMATE programmers calculator. Forget putting up lame buttons with numbers on them; that's fine in the real world, but hardly useful in a GUI, let's instead focus on functionality, and that's just what I did.

AnalogX PCalc allows you to enter any equation in the EXACT same format as C/C++, and it will process it with the same precedence, giving you the results in a variety of formats! PCalc also supports the use of user-defined variables, and also has most of the common constants used already defined.

Unlocker for ''in use'' files Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF

Darwin Sanoy

How many times have you had to completely reboot Windows to get Explorer or some other greed process to let go of a file you needed ...

Unlocker really rocks.  It integrates into the right click menu and can show you what processes have a lock on a file.  You can shutdown the process (preferred) or simply unlock the file.  Not only is it free, but the author provides a comparison matrix against 19 other utilities that unlock files and it is apparent he has put some thought into making his comprehensive!

Obviously you have to be circumspect about ending processes to release a file lock - but I've seen Windows Explorer hang on to a file until reboot when it isn't really using it.
