Fence could change border town landscape Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

With its motto "Where Yee-Hah meets Ole," Eagle Pass is a border town that prides itself on being both Tex and Mex, a community with many cultural and financial ties that bind it to its sister city across the Rio Grande.

But the U.S. government's proposal to build a giant fence along the border threatens to remake the landscape in the name of national security, undermining the relationship between the two cities and, some say, permanently scarring the riverfront.

Local leaders and residents who are fighting the fence have become increasingly frustrated with what they regard as the federal government's heavy-handed tactics, which include threatening letters, lawsuits and swift legal judgments.

"They come in here like storm troopers," Mayor Chad Foster said. "They are steamrolling the people and abusing our liberties and are absolutely out of control."

Texas Town Residents Report UFO Sighting Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

Isabelle Duerme

Stephenville, TX

Residents of a Texas community found themselves stunned by a celestial scene involving what many believe was a UFO.

Eyewitness accounts told of a large, silent, object with flashing lights, with residents insisting that it was lower to the ground than an airplane.

"People wonder what in the world it is because this is the Bible Belt, and everyone is afraid it's the end of times," explained Steve Allen, a freight company owner and pilot. He insisted that the thing he saw, a mile long and half a mile wide, was "positively, absolutely nothing from these parts."

Death of troops to heighten debate after their editorial appeared in papers

The sharp words of a Texas City soldier who was critical of the war in Iraq and killed there this week may continue to echo in Washington.

Sgt. Omar Mora and six other enlisted soldiers, including one who was killed in the same non-combat accident Monday, recently signed a bold, public letter in which they questioned whether the war in Iraq can be won militarily.

The letter — published as a column sharing the view of a group of soldiers in battle — was referenced in a Senate hearing this week in which Gen. David Petraeus delivered an update on the war.
