Larry Pratt

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) has shone a spotlight on the criminal behavior of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, commonly referred to as the ATF. At a hearing last week, Issa took on Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich by asking him: “Who authorized this program that was so felony stupid it got people killed.”

Chairman Issa started off the interrogation of Weich by holding up one of the pages that the ATF had provided his committee. It was completely blackened, one of hundreds that had been totally redacted by the agency. (You can see a picture of this on GOA’s website.) Issa told Weich that this was unacceptable and that he was tired of the lack of cooperation at the Department of Justice.

Issa also caught Weich in a lie by pointing to a letter in which he denied any knowledge of Fast and Furious, when we now know that Weich did know about the program. Weich said that the letter had been written by a committee and that he did not know who had written that particular sentence. He refused to commit, however, to finding out who authored that lie and reporting back to Issa about it!

(At least during Watergate, Nixon was not covering up any dead bodies.)

The subject of the hearing was Operation Gunrunner, which had been repackaged in October of 2009 as Fast and Furious. What had been a fairly routine sting operation to make an arrest at the time of an illegal firearms sale became a way of letting guns go unmonitored with criminals into Mexico, as well as in the U.S.

Some 2,500 guns have turned up in Mexico from Fast and Furious, and some 150 people have been murdered by criminals using these arms. Two of the deceased were U.S. federal agents.

Are Your Second Amendment Rights at Stake? Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Guns

Just as recently as March, Obama is quoted as saying the following on gun control: "We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar."  Now we get word that the United Nations is working on a global “Small Arms Treaty” to fight “terrorism”, “insurgency” and “international crime syndicates.”  Former UN ambassador John Bolton warns “gun owners to take this initiative seriously, stating that the U.N. ‘is trying to act as though this is really just a treaty about international arms trade between nation states, but there is no doubt that the real agenda here is domestic firearms control.’”  What would this initiative do?  From Forbes …

Enact tougher licensing requirements, creating additional bureaucratic red tape for legal firearms ownership.
Confiscate and destroy all “unauthorized” civilian firearms (exempting those owned by our government of course).
Ban the trade, sale and private ownership of all semi-automatic weapons (any that have magazines even though they still operate in the same one trigger pull – one single “bang” manner as revolvers, a simple fact the ant-gun media never seem to grasp).
Create an international gun registry, clearly setting the stage for full-scale gun confiscation.
In short, overriding our national sovereignty, and in the process, providing license for the federal government to assert preemptive powers over state regulatory powers guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment in addition to our Second Amendment rights.

Now, in order for this to take effect in the United States, the Senate would have to ratify it.  But we are currently talking about a Democrat Senate …

Remember – and think about this carefully – when guns are outlawed only the government will have guns.

Republicans in Texas Senate approve guns on campus Score: More about Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...

AUSTIN, Texas

Republicans in the Texas Senate on Monday approved allowing concealed handgun license holders to carry weapons into public college buildings and classrooms, moving forward on a measure that had stalled until supporters tacked it on to a universities spending bill.

Republican Sen. Jeff Wentworth had been unable to muster the votes he needed under Senate rules to pass the issue as its own bill after the measure met stiff resistance from higher education officials, notably from within the University of Texas system.

The measure seemed all but assured easy passage when the legislative session began in January. The Senate had passed a similar bill in 2009 and about 90 lawmakers in the 150-member House had signed on in support this year. But the bill stalled on its first three votes in the Senate and took some maneuvering by Wentworth to get it through.

Supporters hope Monday's vote will help shove the measure past a roadblock in the House, where a similar bill has been stuck without a vote in that chamber with just a few weeks left in the legislative session.

"Campus carry has more momentum than a runaway freight train," said W. Scott Lewis of Students for Concealed Carry, a nationwide group backing the measure.

The Senate's 12 Democrats had mostly worked as a bloc to stop the measure but were powerless to stop it on Monday when all it took was a simple majority in the 31-member chamber to get it added to the spending bill as an amendment.

Even with large numbers in support, the campus guns measure quickly boiled into one of most controversial issues of the session.

Supporters call it a critical self-defense measure and guns rights issue. UT-System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa wrote lawmakers and Gov. Rick Perry outlining worries from university officials that guns on campus will lead to more campus crime and suicides.
